In a recent TIME magazine article online (see link above), they discuss the dismal future of healthcare, citing the recent nurse strike in New York. Staffing shortages are happening everywhere, and it is going to get worse.

The pandemic showed us that the “necessary” services the primary care and specialty offices held you to, holding your prescription refills hostage if you did not attend, were not so necessary after all.  Now, we are seeing the consequences.

Nurses and doctors are overworked with no end in sight. We have to ask: what can be done about this? Should healthcare be restructured for a more efficient system? What services should be included by all health plans? How can we ensure that those who need care get the help they need.

Blog Introduction: Hospital staffing, insurance scams, and the physician of the future—these are all topics that can be intimidating to discuss. We often don’t know how to make sense of them, or even how they tie together. But understanding these topics is key to taking charge of our own health care and being proactive in making sure we get the care we need. Enter functional medicine, a new approach to health care that focuses on prevention and puts individuals in control of their own health. Let’s take a look at what functional medicine is and why it could revolutionize health care in the near future.

What Is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is an evidence-based practice that takes a holistic approach to healthcare. It emphasizes preventive measures such as lifestyle changes and dietary modifications rather than waiting for disease symptoms to manifest before treating them. This form of medicine also looks at the body as a whole, rather than focusing on individual organs or systems like traditional Western medicine does. It seeks to identify underlying causes of disease and develop treatments that address those root causes instead of just treating symptoms. In other words, functional medicine attempts to heal not just the body but also the mind and spirit by creating customized treatment plans tailored to each individual patient’s needs and lifestyle choices.

Benefits of Functional Medicine

The benefits of functional medicine are far reaching, both for individual patients and for the health care system as a whole. From an individual perspective, this type of approach can lead to better outcomes with fewer side effects since it relies heavily on preventive measures such as diet modification and lifestyle changes instead of medications or surgeries. Additionally, it allows for more personalized treatment plans since each patient is considered unique with their own set of risk factors and goals for their health. At a larger scale, this approach leads to reduced costs since it focuses on prevention rather than costly treatments down the line.

Conclusion:  The Future Is Now

Functional medicine is quickly becoming recognized as an effective way to treat both acute and chronic diseases while minimizing side effects associated with traditional approaches to healthcare. By taking matters into our own hands through prevention-focused approaches such as dietary modifications and lifestyle changes, we can be proactive in protecting our own health while reducing costs associated with medical treatment down the line. With its focus on personalized treatments tailored specifically to each individual patient’s needs, functional medicine may very well be the key to transforming healthcare in the near future.
