As we head into the colder months, many of us are hearing about the “quademic” — a convergence of RSV, influenza, COVID-19, and Norovirus. While this may sound daunting, there are practical steps we can all take to stay prepared and healthy. It seems there is never a shortage of News Media trying to scare us into staying home, isolating or wearing masks these days. The best defense is a good offense as they say. Your offensive moves are all the things you can do to build your immune system and heatlhy home. 

Understanding the Quademic

The term “quademic” refers to the simultaneous circulation of multiple respiratory viruses. While each can cause symptoms like cough, fever, and fatigue, or diarrhea, it’s important to know how to distinguish and respond to each.

Common Symptoms

  • RSV: Often starts with mild cold-like symptoms but can be more severe in young children and the elderly.
  • Influenza: Characterized by sudden onset of fever, muscle aches, and fatigue.
  • COVID-19: Symptoms range widely but often include cough, fever, and loss of taste or smell.
  • Norovirus: Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes sudden onset of vomiting and diarrhea, often spreading quickly in crowded places like schools and cruise ships.

What You Can Do

  1. Be Prepared: Keep essentials like a thermometer, over-the-counter medications, and a excellent hand washing and skincare at home.
