I would invite you to read the article by Dr. Andrew Weil regarding this issues. Tis the season for sinus irritations and allergies. The article reveals that as adults it is possible to develop new allergies, but it is not likely the reason for your nasal congestion or runny nose. In older adults it is more likely related to environmental irritants (think smoke from field burning, aerosolized mold and dust from the winds we all love, animals, etc.), medications (like ACE inhibitors, certain hormones), life situations (pregnancy will lead to congestion), or temperature changes (called vasomotor rhinitis).

Each of these is treated differently. Please let me know if you suffer from this and we can get to the bottom of your drippy nose.

Products that I like to recommend if you suffer from allergies are below:

Vital Nutrients BCQ – 1-3 capsules up to 4 times a day when symptoms are severe (do not use if allergic to ragweed)

Vital Nutrients Aller- C similar dosing as above, ok if allergic to ragweed

Ortho Molecular D-Hist 2 caps 2-3 times a day for 2 weeks and maintenance is 2 caps daily

Stinging Nettle

Quercetin

Astragalus if allergic asthma or cough

arabinogalactin for kids

Of course, if you know what you are allergic to, try to avoid exposure. Moderate to severe allergy sufferers will find relief running the AC early on to avoid too much pollen exposure. Add a HEPA certified filter and change monthly instead of every 6 months to further reduce airborne irritants. If indoor allergens or irritants are the culprit, use HEPA vacuum bags, microfiber dust mops, eliminate carpets if possible. Dust regularly, wet dusting is less irritating than dry dusting. Avoid artificial scents or aerosolized fragrances that are not made from essential oils. These can be irritants and lead to respiratory issues as well as lead to endocrine disruption if exposed over time.
