Libido shifts are one of the many peri menopausal symptoms, and are extremely common — but not always in the direction people expect. Many women experience lower desire, but a surprising number experience the opposite: a sudden increase in libido, feeling turned on more often, more sensitive to touch, or craving intimacy in new ways.

Both ends of the spectrum are normal. Hormone swings during perimenopause are powerful, and they influence the body, brain, and nervous system in different ways.

Why Libido Can Drop in Perimenopause

When estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, women may notice:

  • Lower desire
  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort
  • More irritability
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Feeling disconnected from their bodies

These shifts can make it harder to feel present or receptive to intimacy.

Why Libido Can Increase in Perimenopause

On the flip side, some women experience:

  • Higher sexual drive
  • More spontaneous desire
  • Heightened sensitivity
  • More erotic or vivid thoughts
  • Feeling physically “revved up”

This can happen because:

  • Testosterone may temporarily spike during hormonal shifts
  • Progesterone drops, removing its calming influence
  • Estrogen fluctuates, increasing blood flow and sensation
  • Nervous system activation comes with midlife transitions
  • A desire to feel alive, connected, or powerful emotionally and spiritually

This increased libido isn’t “wrong” or “dangerous.” It’s your biology waking up, your body recalibrating, and your psyche processing a major life transition.

When Her High Libido Meets His Low Testosterone

This is a very real — and often painful — dynamic for couples.

Low testosterone (andropause) in men can cause:

  • Lower sexual desire
  • Erectile issues
  • Fatigue
  • Mood changes
  • Less confidence
  • Emotional withdrawal

Imagine the emotional mismatch:

  • She feels desire rising, seeking connection, closeness, and sexual energy as a way to regulate her stress and feel alive.
  • He feels desire falling, confused or ashamed, worried about performance, or physically unable to match her energy.

Both partners can feel rejected, confused, or misunderstood — even though neither is doing anything wrong.

This Is a Biology Problem, Not a Relationship Failure

Once couples understand the physiology, compassion grows.

Hormone changes are not character flaws.
They’re not moral issues.
And they’re not signs of falling out of love.

They’re simply perimenopause symptoms created by shifts in:

  • Estrogen
  • Progesterone
  • Testosterone
  • Cortisol
  • Thyroid
  • Blood sugar regulation
  • Nervous system balance

How Couples Can Reconnect

Here’s where healing begins:

For both partners:

  • Get sleep back on track
  • Prioritize protein and blood sugar balance
  • Strength train for hormone optimization
  • Practice open, compassionate communication

For women:
Understand that libido swings (high or low) are message signals from your hormones and nervous system — not something to judge.

For men:
Recognize that low testosterone is incredibly common and very treatable. Addressing it often transforms mood, confidence, and connection.

For the relationship:
Curiosity, softness, and shared understanding dissolve shame.

Healthy intimacy is about more than matching desire — it’s about healing together.
